Asarah B'Teves Schedule
Fast begins: 5:35 am
Shacharis: 6:30
Mincha: 4:15 pm
Candle lighting: 4:29 pm
Fast ends: 5:29 pm [Kiddush]
This year, we have the relatively rare occurrence of a fast day on Erev Shabbos; in fact, Asarah B'Teves is the only fast day that can fall on Erev Shabbos. Here are a few guidelines for this Asarah B'Teves:
Although Shabbos begins at 4:30, the fast remains in effect until tzais hakochavim, which is at 5:29 pm. We will daven Mincha at 4:15, followed immediately by Kabbalas Shabbos/Maariv, so that everyone can be home in time to break the fast. Even if one accepts Shabbos early, one continues fasting until 5:29.
As it is Shabbos, one may not eat anything before hearing kiddush.
We sing Shalom Aleichem and Eishes Chayil as usual. However, if it is already past 5:30 pm and people are hungry, it is proper to make kiddush and hamotzi first and then to sing these songs during the meal.
Although it is a mitzvah to taste Shabbos food on Erev Shabbos, we are not allowed to taste it this Erev Shabbos. If one needs to taste it to see if other ingredients need to be added or adjusted, it is permitted to put a small amount in one's mouth and then to spit it out without swallowing anything.
At Mincha, Aneinu is inserted in Shema Koleinu as on every fast day. However, Avinu Malkeinu and Tachanun are not recited.
Every fast day is a special time for tefilah and teshuvah. On this Asarah B'Teves, we need to give all of our energy towards davening for shalom, geulah and the success of klal yisrael.
